The Stories Beneath the Soil – Liberty Hill Cemetery

I had the honor of walking through Liberty Hill Cemetery recently, filming a guided tour that opened my eyes to just how much history is tucked away in this quiet corner of Woodway.

This isn’t just a cemetery—it’s a record of the people who came before us. Early settlers. Veterans. Entire families who built this area from the ground up. Every headstone tells a story, and in this mini-documentary, you’ll hear about many of them.

What struck me most was how much of our local identity is connected to this place. It’s sacred ground. And if we don’t take the time to understand and preserve it, those stories risk being forgotten.

Take a few minutes to watch the video. You’ll walk away with a deeper appreciation for where we come from—and why it matters today more than ever.

Too bad none of them were interested in helping me, Mark Dutton, or the Boy Scout group before me or the many others before them. Many have worked this ground for decades with little help from the Woodway government. However they did provide a rolloff dumpster on many ocasions. If you're truly interested, I wrote and published the history of these two Cemeteries on land donated by Sterling Bradley. You can read about it in one of the volumes of McLennan County Cemiteries in the historical department of the Waco Library. Check with Bill Buckner.

Thank you for all you've done. I have lived on Topeka for 20 years, and never knew about this cemetery. The history is so rich. I will be creating a follow up or two. I will also check out the Waco Library.

Thank you for sharing and working on keeping these people memories alive. It was sad to see that they are neglecting this area and attempting to cover up these forgotten souls
